Celebrating the UK-Italian Friendship: The UK–Emilia-Romagna Festival in Ravenna

On 10 April 2025, Consul Prof Maurizio Bragagni OBE was honoured to accept an invitation by the British Embassy in Rome to attend the UK–Emilia-Romagna Festival, held in Ravenna’s historic Piazza del Popolo.

This was a remarkable event celebrating the friendship between the two countries and was graced by the presence of  King Charles III and Queen Camilla. At the same time, it marked the culmination of Their Majesties’ four-day state visit to Italy and the Holy See, underscoring the enduring bonds between the United Kingdom and Italy.

The festival celebrated the rich culinary traditions of the Emilia-Romagna region, renowned for its artisanal produce and commitment to the Slow Food movement. Local farmers, chefs, and artisans showcased their dedication to preserving regional gastronomy and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Queen Camilla actively participated in pasta-making demonstrations, while King Charles sampled regional chutneys and engaged with producers affected by recent floods, highlighting the resilience of the local community.

The festival also served as a poignant commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Ravenna’s liberation from Nazi occupation during World War II. King Charles and Queen Camilla paid tribute to this significant historical event, meeting with veterans and acknowledging the sacrifices made for freedom.

In addition to the festival, Their Majesties explored Ravenna’s rich cultural heritage, visiting the Basilica of San Vitale and Dante’s tomb. King Charles contributed to a mosaic project commemorating his coronation, symbolizing the enduring artistic connections between the UK and Italy.

The UK–Emilia-Romagna Festival exemplified the deep-rooted friendship between the United Kingdom and Italy, fostering cultural exchange and mutual appreciation. Consul Bragagni appreciated being invited to this event, as it highlighted the importance of diplomatic engagement in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting shared values of sustainability, heritage preservation, and community resilience.

The UK–Emilia Romagna Festival stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and Italy, highlighting the power of cultural diplomacy in uniting nations through shared heritage and common goals.
