As part of our outreach programme, on February 25Il 6 2025, the Consulate of San Marino in London welcomed UCL (University College London) students, who were members of the UCL United Nations Association.

In an illuminating discussion with students, Consul Maurizio Bragagni via a PowerPoint presentation, provided invaluable insights into San Marino’s diplomatic mission, shedding light on the nation’s foreign policy priorities, international engagement, and evolving relations with key global players. The session underscored the importance of diplomacy in navigating today’s complex geopolitical landscape while maintaining San Marino’s unique identity and neutrality.

As one of the world’s oldest republics, San Marino has crafted a foreign policy that harmonises its historical sovereignty with contemporary international demands. Despite its small size, the country actively participates in global affairs, leveraging its strategic neutrality to foster dialogue, cooperation, and peace. San Marino’s engagement with international organizations such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the OSCE enables it to advocate for multilateralism, human rights, and sustainable development.

For students curious about diplomatic careers, Consul Bragagni offered an inside look at the daily workings of a consulate. From high-level negotiations to cultural diplomacy, diplomatic staff juggle a myriad of responsibilities. Our work includes maintaining bilateral relations, offering consular services, promoting economic partnerships, etc. The ability to balance strategic interests while fostering meaningful relationships remains at the heart of successful diplomacy.
San Marino’s foreign policy is designed to safeguard its sovereignty while ensuring active participation in regional and international frameworks. As a non-EU member, the country maintains a unique relationship with the European Union, negotiating association agreements to secure economic and financial cooperation while preserving its autonomy. Additionally, San Marino engages in diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with major powers ensuring a diversified and stable foreign policy approach.
Consul Bragagni addressed the evolving diplomatic and trade relations between San Marino and the UK in light of Brexit. While historical ties remain strong, the consulate prioritises enhancing trade opportunities, fostering investment, and reinforcing people-to-people exchanges. Strengthening bilateral cooperation in sectors such as financial services, technology, and cultural diplomacy is key to solidifying San Marino’s presence in the UK. The recent signing of a convention to eliminate double taxation on income, along with new measures to combat tax evasion and avoidance, provides a strong foundation for deepening economic bilateral cooperation.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where students explored pathways into diplomacy and international relations. Consul Bragagni emphasised the importance of mastering negotiation skills, adaptability, linguistic proficiency, and cross-cultural understanding in building a successful diplomatic career. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, the next generation of diplomats must be equipped with the skills and vision to navigate an increasingly interconnected and dynamic world.
This dialogue between Consul Bragagni and UCL’s aspiring diplomats highlights the enduring relevance of diplomacy in shaping international affairs. San Marino’s example proves that even the smallest nations can play a pivotal role in promoting global cooperation, peace, and prosperity.
