Prof George Holmes received the Grand Cross of the Order of St Agatha

Prof Holmes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bolton, and his delegation were hosted with exceptional hospitality by the people and officials of San Marino, in a visit on the occasion of receiving the upgraded award of the Order of St Agatha to the highest rank of Grand Cross.

The delegation was accompanied by Consul Prof Maurizio Bragagni Esq OBE, and the visit received great assistance from the Directorate of Diplomatic Protocol and several members of the Sammarinese government.

One of the highlights of the visit, organised from 2-5 September 2024, was the celebration of San Marino Day (3rd of September), which Prof Holmes was delighted to witness. The cultural significance of the event, showcasing the pride and tradition of the Sammarinese people, was an unforgettable experience for him. This event provided the delegation with a deeper understanding of San Marino’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

The day after, Prof Holmes was deeply honoured by the conferral of the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Agatha, a prestigious recognition that underscores the importance of his visit. The official ceremony was presided over by HE Dr Luca Beccari, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, benefited from the presence of the Secretary of State for Finance and Budget, HE Dr Marco Gatti, the Secretary of State for Education and Culture, University and Scientific Research, Youth Policies; HE Dr Teodoro Lonfernini, and witnessed by several San Marino officials and members of the delegation from Bolton University.

This visit to San Marino by Prof George Holmes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bolton, and his delegation has marked a significant step forward in fostering relations between the UK and the Republic of San Marino. The visit, which was met with a warm reception and professionalism, provided an opportunity for both sides to explore areas of potential collaboration, particularly in the realms of academia and culture.

Prof Holmes has pledged to strengthen academic and cultural exchanges between the UK and San Marino. These initiatives will focus on promoting mutual understanding and expanding the existing partnerships between the two nations.
