The Consulate of the Republic of San Marino in London is honoured to announce and celebrate the recent elevation of The Rt Hon Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE to the esteemed rank of Grand Officer of the Equestrian Order of Saint Agatha—a significant recognition of his continued dedication to fostering international cooperation, diplomacy, and economic development.
This distinguished honour marks the second recognition bestowed upon Lord Johnson by the Republic of San Marino. He was first conferred the Order of Saint Agatha in September 2021, in acknowledgment of his steadfast commitment to advancing the interests of both nations through enhanced diplomatic and commercial relations.
Since receiving this initial recognition, Lord Johnson has played a pivotal role in strengthening UK–San Marino relations. As a respected public servant, financier, and Conservative peer, he has worked to support key bilateral negotiations, including frameworks aimed at avoiding double taxation and facilitating trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
The Ceremony was held on 8 April 2025, in the historic heart of San Marino, during which Lord Johnson was formally elevated to Grand Officer of the Equestrian Order of Saint Agatha. This solemn ceremony was presided over by His Excellency Dr Luca Beccari, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The award underscores Lord Johnson’s enduring commitment to transnational collaboration and mutual respect between democratic institutions.
During the proceedings, Lord Johnson took the opportunity to reiterate his “sincere admiration for the world’s oldest Republic”, highlighting the enduring values shared between the United Kingdom and San Marino.
Following the ceremony, Lord Johnson and his family members were received in private audience at the Palazzo Pubblico by the Captains Regent, Their Excellences Mrs Denise Bronzetti and Mr Italo Righi. The cordial meeting served as a reaffirmation of the longstanding friendship and shared aspirations of the two nations.
Lord Johnson’s professional journey reflects a balance of entrepreneurial achievement and public responsibility. A co-founder of Somerset Capital Management, he served as Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party between 2017 and 2019, later taking on ministerial duties within the UK government, including roles at the Department for Business and Trade.
His expertise has been instrumental in shaping economic policy and advancing UK interests abroad, and he remains a dedicated advocate for fostering sustainable development, innovation, and diplomatic inclusivity.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Lord Johnson on this prestigious honour and express our deepest gratitude for his enduring contributions to strengthening the relationship between the United Kingdom and the Republic of San Marino.
