On February 27, 2025, Consul Prof Maurizio Bragagni OBE engaged in a stimulating dialogue with members of the UCL Italian Society and Diplomacy Society. The event, hosted by Maya Checchi—a member of both societies and an intern at the San Marino Consulate—offered attendees an overview of the Consul’s professional journey and insights into diplomacy and business.
Consul Bragagni’s career trajectory is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. In 2019, he was appointed Honorary Consul of San Marino to the UK, and by 2023 he was trusted to the role of Alternate Governor to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), consolidating his diplomatic career.
As CEO of Tratos Ltd, he successfully led the company’s expansion in the UK, transforming it into a significant player in the cable manufacturing industry. Under his leadership, Tratos is thriving and embarked on the journey of sustainable growth and honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2019 and many other awards recognizing not only the company’s excellence but also paving the way for deeper involvement in British politics and society.

The talk was followed by a lively Q&A, where Consul Bragagni reflected on the cultural nuances he encountered upon relocating to the UK. He advised an audience of curious students with diverse interests. Some were interested in Italian culture and gained insights into the differences between British and Italian business cultures. The Consul explained the importance of obtaining high-quality education.
Other students had questions about diplomacy, and the Consul advised them on how best to equip themselves for a future diplomatic career. He emphasised the importance of language skills and knowledge of international law and encouraged them to gain work experience, for example, shadowing MPs or even considering internships with foreign Embassies and Consulates. This advice highlights the multifaceted skill set required for a successful diplomatic career.
Beyond the February 27 event, the Consulate of San Marino in London has actively engaged with academic institutions. Notably, on February 25, 2025, the Consulate welcomed the UCL United Nations Association for an insightful discussion on Sammarinese diplomacy. Such initiatives reflect the Consulate’s commitment to fostering educational collaborations and promoting diplomatic and cultural exchange.
