On 16 September 2020, the UK Ambassador, Jill Morris, paid a working visit to San Marino for the very first time since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. She headed a delegation composed by several UK officials, which was cordially welcomed by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, by the Ambassador of San Marino in the UK, Silvia Marchetti and Consul of San Marino in the United Kingdom, Maurizio Bragagni.
During the visit Ambassador Morris discussed with the San Marino officials the current issues related to the bilateral relations and the Brexit implications, as well reiterated the common goal to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interests, including in multilateral fora.
A broad and lively discussion was dedicated to the post-Covid recovery phases in both countries, also in light of the ending soon of the Brexit transitional period. Proposals have been made regarding common initiatives of mutual interest, which may also arise from the new perspectives of future UK-San Marino cooperation. As well the interlocutors touched upon global issues such as, climate change and upcoming COP 26 Conference in Glasgow, prohibition of all forms of use of chemical weapons, elections in the international organisations, etc.
The visit concluded with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Youth Mobility Scheme, intended to facilitate the movement of young people from/ to the UK and San Marino, and the Memorandum on the the UK government’s donation to the Republic of San Marino for the post covid-19 recovery phase.
The Honorary Consul, Dr Bragagni, was delighted to take part in this official visit and expressed the readiness of the Consulate to assist in implementing the above memorandums and to move forward the processes of strengthening the bilateral relations.
